A List of Risks Associated With Cosmetic Surgery
Published on Tuesday, 30 March 2010

Cosmetic surgery aims at improving the external appearance of a person. The risk of developing complications is very high, if the surgery is carried out by uncertified surgeons. Individuals with poor overall health and habits such as smoking, drinking alcohol and using drugs are at increased risk of developing side effects.

Risks associated with cosmetic surgeries

1. Infections: coupling multiple surgeries such as removal of eye bags and facelift at one go increases the time period of the surgery. This in turn increases the risk of developing infections at the site of surgery. Infections delay the healing process. If the infections are not treated, they result in death of skin cells.

2. Risks due to anaesthesia: General anaesthesia used during the surgery results in certain complications. They include increased heart rate, brain damage, paralysis and stroke.

3. Irregularities: Errors during the surgery result in development of irregularities at the site of surgery. In certain cases, the irregularities are very severe that a second surgery is done immediately to correct them.

4. Allergic reactions: Minor allergic reactions such as skin rashes develop due to the sutures. If the rashes are left untreated, the underlying tissues may get damaged. Damage to the sensory or motor nerves can result in loss of sensation. Hence, pay attention even to minor reactions.

5. Internal bleeding and hernia: Very loose sutures at the site of surgery can result in internal bleeding. Hernia may also develop if the underlying tissue is not held properly through sutures.

The risk of developing the above complications can be minimised by selecting well-qualified surgeon. Talk to the surgeon about the pros and cons of the surgery. Find out if you are an ideal candidate for the surgery.  If you are on any medication, do not forget to inform the same to the surgeon. Certain drugs increase the extent of bleeding at the time of surgery. Hence, it is essential to reveal all the details about your health condition before undergoing the surgery.
